Origins and Ethos

Transmitter was born from the collective vision of six founding members: Rob de Oude, Carl Gunhouse, Sara Jones, Rod Malin, Tom Marquet, and Mel Prest. The gallery’s inception was rooted in a shared commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive art community. Over the years, the curatorial team has expanded, welcoming new perspectives and energies to its collaborative approach.

A Space for Artistic Exploration

Located at 1329 Willoughby Ave in Brooklyn, Transmitter occupies a vital space in the borough’s thriving art ecosystem. The gallery’s clean, organized aesthetic allows the artwork to take center stage, reflecting the curators’ commitment to professionalism and their focus on the artists and their work.

Diverse Programming

Transmitter’s exhibition calendar is a testament to its commitment to variety and experimentation. The gallery presents a mix of solo exhibitions, two-person shows, and group exhibitions throughout the year. This diverse approach allows for a wide range of artistic voices and mediums to be showcased, from traditional painting and sculpture to more experimental installation and multimedia works.

Supporting Emerging and Established Artists

One of Transmitter’s key strengths lies in its ability to provide a platform for both emerging and established artists. The gallery’s location in Bushwick, surrounded by other art spaces, ensures significant foot traffic and exposure for exhibiting artists. Additionally, Transmitter organizes events such as artist talks, fostering dialogue and deeper engagement with the works on display.

A Collaborative Curatorial Approach

What sets Transmitter apart is its collaborative curatorial model. Each exhibition is largely shaped by an individual curator’s vision, allowing for a diverse range of perspectives and approaches throughout the year. This model ensures a fresh and dynamic exhibition program that reflects the varied interests and aesthetics of the curatorial team.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Transmitter is not just a gallery; it’s an active participant in the Brooklyn art community. Its presence on a block with five other galleries and in a neighborhood with around 50 art spaces contributes to a vibrant local art scene. The gallery’s efforts to curate artists from outside its immediate networks also help to bring new voices and perspectives to the community.

Looking to the Future

As Transmitter continues to evolve, it remains committed to its founding principles of showcasing multidisciplinary, international, and experimental art. The gallery’s ability to adapt and grow, as evidenced by its expanding curatorial team, suggests a bright future filled with exciting exhibitions and continued support for artists pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.

Transmitter Gallery stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in the art world. By bringing together diverse perspectives and maintaining a commitment to quality and experimentation, Transmitter has carved out a unique and vital space in Brooklyn’s art landscape. For art enthusiasts, collectors, and artists alike, Transmitter offers a window into the cutting edge of contemporary art practice, making it a must-visit destination in New York’s vibrant art scene.
