The Founder’s Vision

Sarah Hong’s journey into the art world began in an unconventional way. Originally from Belgium, she spent several years working as a successful shipbroker before making a bold career shift. Drawn to the creative energy of Hong Kong, she decided to open her own gallery in the city’s vibrant Sheung Wan district.

From the very beginning, Sarah’s vision for the gallery was clear: to provide a platform for both emerging and established artists, with a particular focus on Hong Kong-based creatives. She wanted to create a space that would not only showcase incredible artwork but also foster a sense of community and dialogue around contemporary art.

“I wanted to create a space that felt welcoming and approachable, where people could come and engage with art in a meaningful way,” Sarah explains. “At the same time, I was committed to representing artists who were pushing boundaries and exploring new ideas.”[1]

A Diverse and Eclectic Collection

One of the things that immediately struck me about Sarah Hong Gallery is the incredible diversity of its collection. The gallery represents a wide range of artists working across various mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography and mixed media installations.

During my visit, I was particularly drawn to the works of Hong Kong artist Koon Wai-bong, whose large-scale ink paintings are a mesmerizing blend of traditional Chinese techniques and contemporary abstraction. Sarah was one of the first gallerists to showcase Koon’s work, and his pieces have become a staple of the gallery’s collection.[1]

Another standout artist is Sarah Lai, whose multimedia installations explore themes of identity, memory, and the human experience. Her piece “Fragments of Memory” is a haunting and immersive work that invites viewers to navigate through a maze of suspended objects, each representing a different aspect of the artist’s personal history.

But the gallery’s offerings extend far beyond Hong Kong’s borders. Sarah has a keen eye for international talent, and she regularly features artists from around the world. During my visit, I was captivated by the vibrant, textural paintings of British artist Charlotte Cornish, whose works are a celebration of color, texture, and the natural world.

Fostering Community and Dialogue

What truly sets Sarah Hong Gallery apart, however, is its commitment to fostering a sense of community and dialogue around contemporary art. The gallery regularly hosts artist talks, panel discussions, and other events that bring together artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts for lively conversations and exchanges of ideas.

“I believe that art should be a catalyst for conversation and connection,” Sarah says. “By creating opportunities for people to engage with the work and the artists behind it, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of contemporary art.”[1]

One of the gallery’s most popular events is the annual “Blue Lotus Luck” exhibition, which showcases the work of artists who have previously exhibited at the gallery. The show is a celebration of the “Blue Lotus luck” – a phenomenon that Sarah has observed, where artists who exhibit at her space often experience a surge of success and recognition in their careers.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to attend one of the gallery’s artist talks, where Hong Kong-based painter Lee Kit discussed his latest body of work. It was a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s creative process and the themes that inspire his work. Afterwards, Sarah hosted a lively Q&A session, encouraging attendees to engage with the artist and share their own perspectives.

A Commitment to Sustainability

In addition to its artistic offerings, Sarah Hong Gallery is also deeply committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The gallery has implemented a number of eco-friendly practices, such as using recycled materials for exhibition displays and minimizing waste through careful planning and resource management.

But Sarah’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond just operational practices. She has also made it a priority to represent artists who explore environmental themes and raise awareness about issues like climate change, pollution, and the importance of protecting our natural world.

One such artist is Casper Chan, whose mixed media installations incorporate found objects and recycled materials to create thought-provoking commentaries on consumerism and waste. His piece “Plastic Ocean” is a haunting and powerful work that confronts viewers with the devastating impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and marine life.

A Bright Future Ahead

As I left Sarah Hong Gallery, I couldn’t help but feel inspired and energized by the incredible artwork and vibrant community I had encountered. It’s clear that Sarah’s vision for the gallery has resonated deeply with both artists and art lovers alike, and her commitment to fostering dialogue and promoting sustainability is truly admirable.

Looking ahead, Sarah has big plans for the gallery’s future. She hopes to continue expanding her international reach, bringing in even more diverse and innovative artists from around the world. She’s also exploring the possibility of publishing a series of books that document the visual stories of Hong Kong, capturing the city’s rich cultural heritage and ever-evolving landscape through the lens of contemporary art.

But at the heart of it all is Sarah’s unwavering passion for art and her belief in its power to connect, inspire, and transform. “Art has the ability to transcend boundaries and bring people together in a way that few other things can,” she says. “And that’s what I hope to achieve with this gallery – to create a space where art can truly thrive and touch people’s lives.”[1]

As someone who has experienced the magic of Sarah Hong Gallery firsthand, I have no doubt that she will continue to make waves in the art world, championing new talent and pushing the boundaries of what contemporary art can be. This vibrant, community-driven space is a true gem in the heart of Hong Kong, and I can’t wait to see what Sarah and her incredible roster of artists have in store for us next.
