The Early Years

In the late 1990s, the contemporary art landscape in Mexico was relatively sparse, with few galleries dedicated to showcasing the country’s emerging artistic talents. Kuri and Manzutto saw an opportunity to change that. They launched Kurimanzutto with a bold and unconventional approach, hosting their first exhibition, “Economía de mercado” (Market Economy), in a rather unexpected venue – a supermarket parking lot.

The exhibition featured 14 artists, including the renowned Gabriel Orozco, and the artworks were priced affordably using materials sourced from a local market. This innovative approach set the tone for Kurimanzutto’s future endeavors, as the gallery continued to operate out of various unconventional spaces, including the Mexico City airport and the founders’ own apartment, before finally settling into a dedicated gallery space in 2008.

Championing Mexican Art

Over the years, Kurimanzutto has remained steadfast in its mission to support and promote the careers of younger Mexican artists. The gallery’s roster has grown to include 33 national and international artists, each with a unique voice and perspective. Through a series of thought-provoking exhibitions, Kurimanzutto has not only introduced these artists to the local community but has also played a crucial role in bringing contemporary Mexican art to the global stage.

Experimental and Risk-Taking Approach

One of the hallmarks of Kurimanzutto’s approach is its willingness to take risks and experiment with unconventional exhibition formats. The gallery has consistently challenged the traditional boundaries of the art world, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of contemporary art.

Conclusion

In the ever-evolving landscape of the art world, Kurimanzutto has emerged as a true trailblazer, a gallery that has not only championed the work of Mexican artists but has also inspired a new generation of art enthusiasts and collectors. As it continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of contemporary art, Kurimanzutto remains a beacon of innovation and creativity, firmly cementing its place as a cornerstone of Mexico City’s vibrant art scene.
