A Rich History

Founded in the mid-1980s, the Bakehouse Art Complex emerged from a collective effort by artists who were facing eviction from their studios in Coconut Grove due to redevelopment. Determined to secure a permanent home safe from future gentrification, these visionary artists, with support from the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County, acquired a 33,000 square-foot former Art Deco-era industrial bakery.

The Campus

Situated on an impressive 2.3-acre parcel in what was once a blighted neighborhood of Wynwood, the BAC’s campus is a testament to adaptive reuse and artistic ingenuity. The main building, constructed in 1926, now houses:

  • Approximately 60 artist studios of varying sizes
  • Two galleries
  • A classroom
  • Print room
  • Photo lab
  • Ceramics facilities
  • Woodworking and welding areas

This diverse range of facilities supports a wide array of artistic practices, from painting and sculpture to digital media and performance art.

A Thriving Artist Community

At the heart of the Bakehouse Art Complex is its vibrant community of over 100 resident and associate artists. This diverse group represents a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and artistic practices. The BAC provides these artists with:

  • Affordable studio spaces
  • Exhibition opportunities
  • Professional and creative development programs
  • Workshops and classes
  • Community outreach initiatives

Public Engagement and Exhibitions

The Bakehouse Art Complex is committed to engaging with the wider community. Open daily for public visitation from 12 PM to 5 PM, it hosts regular exhibitions, events, and twice-annual Open Studios. Recent exhibitions have explored themes ranging from climate activism to rituals of remembrance for victims of gun violence.

The complex also participates in major art events like Art Basel, which has significantly boosted its profile and spurred numerous short-term satellite shows during the annual event.

Looking to the Future

As the BAC approaches its fourth decade, it stands at an exciting inflection point in its development. With support from organizations like the Knight Foundation and the Jorge Perez Family Foundation, the complex is undertaking a master planning process to determine how it can best serve the evolving needs of Miami’s cultural community.

Future plans include:

  • Renovating the historic building into a 21st-century art-making facility
  • Expanding the complex’s facilities
  • Building attainable housing for artists on the campus
  • Ensuring long-term sustainability

Conclusion

The Bakehouse Art Complex continues to play a crucial role in Miami’s art ecosystem. By providing affordable spaces, fostering collaboration, and supporting artistic development, the BAC remains true to its founding mission while adapting to the changing landscape of contemporary art.

For art enthusiasts, collectors, and curious visitors alike, the Bakehouse Art Complex offers a unique window into the vibrant, diverse world of Miami’s artistic community. As it moves forward with its ambitious plans for the future, the BAC is poised to remain at the forefront of nurturing and showcasing the best of Miami’s creative talent for generations to come.
