A Rich History

Originally established by Swiss expatriates to highlight their country’s artistic contributions, Swiss Institute has grown far beyond its initial scope. Over the years, it has occupied various locations across New York City, including SoHo and the Upper East Side, before settling into its current home at 38 St. Marks Place in 2018.

The Space

The institute’s current location is a testament to its commitment to accessibility and innovation. Housed in a former bank building redesigned by Selldorf Architects, the four-story space offers:

  • A main gallery for major exhibitions
  • A project space for experimental works
  • An education and public programs floor
  • A library and reading room
  • A usable rooftop for events and installations

This thoughtfully designed space allows Swiss Institute to present a diverse range of artistic expressions while engaging with the community in meaningful ways.

Exhibition Program

Swiss Institute’s exhibition program is both ambitious and diverse. Presenting approximately 10 shows annually, SI offers:

  • Solo exhibitions showcasing emerging talents
  • Group shows exploring contemporary themes
  • Presentations of historical works that contextualize current artistic practices
  • Collaborations with international institutions

The institute is known for its willingness to take risks and present challenging, thought-provoking work that pushes the boundaries of contemporary art.

Public Engagement

Beyond exhibitions, Swiss Institute offers a rich program of public engagement:

  • Weekly events in the library and reading room
  • Educational classes and workshops
  • Artist talks and performances
  • The annual Architecture and Design Series

These initiatives reflect SI’s commitment to fostering dialogue and making contemporary art accessible to a wide audience.

Global Impact

While rooted in New York, Swiss Institute has a global reach. It has collaborated with international institutions and participated in exhibitions worldwide, cementing its status as a respected voice in the global art community.

Recognition and Awards

Since 1996, Swiss Institute has honored influential figures in art and culture with the annual SI Award. Additionally, since 2003, the institute has recognized artists with the SI Artist Tributes, celebrating both emerging talents and established names in contemporary art.

Looking to the Future

As Swiss Institute approaches its fourth decade, it continues to evolve while staying true to its core mission. The institute remains committed to:

  • Promoting forward-thinking and experimental art
  • Serving as a platform for emerging artists
  • Catalyzing new perspectives on celebrated work
  • Fostering appreciation for under-recognized artistic positions

With its unique approach to curation, commitment to accessibility, and focus on experimental art, Swiss Institute continues to be a vital and thought-provoking presence in the contemporary art world.

Swiss Institute stands as a testament to the power of art to transcend national boundaries and spark international conversations. Free to the public and dedicated to diversity, equity, and accessibility, it serves as a model for how cultural institutions can engage with and enrich their communities. As it moves forward, the art world eagerly anticipates what this innovative institution will do next.
