The Founding and Early Years

David Zwirner, born into a family deeply involved in the art world, founded his eponymous gallery in 1993 in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. The gallery’s initial focus was on showcasing an international mix of contemporary artists, including the late Austrian painter Franz West. Despite a challenging start – the gallery’s first exhibition famously sold nothing – Zwirner’s commitment to artists’ careers over immediate business success laid the foundation for future growth.

Expansion and Growth

As the gallery’s reputation grew, so did its physical presence. In 2002, David Zwirner moved to Chelsea, New York’s burgeoning art district. This move marked the beginning of a period of significant expansion. Over the years, the gallery has opened locations in London (2012), Hong Kong, Paris (2019), and most recently, Los Angeles (2023).

The gallery now operates 12 locations across these cities, with each space designed by architect Annabelle Selldorf, a long-time collaborator of Zwirner’s. This consistency in design has helped create a unified aesthetic across the gallery’s global presence.

David Zwirner represents over 60 contemporary artists and estates, spanning a wide range of mediums and styles. The gallery’s roster includes some of the most influential names in contemporary art, such as:
