CANADA

|

In 1999, art dealer Phil Grauer, along with his wife Sarah Braman and partners Wallace Whitney and Suzanne Butler, embarked on a journey that would reshape New York’s contemporary art landscape. They founded CANADA, a gallery with a name as unconventional as its approach to showcasing art. The moniker wasn’t chosen for any patriotic reasons; rather, the founders appreciated the shape of the letters and felt it embodied a “not that ambitious” spirit, perfectly aligning with their initial ethos.

A Unique Approach to Growth

CANADA’s journey has been marked by unconventional decisions and a strong sense of community. In a bold move to expand their space, the gallery owners turned to their artists for support. They invited rising stars like Joe Bradley, Matt Connors, and Michael Williams to invest in CANADA’s future by loaning their work. This unorthodox approach not only secured their expansion but also solidified the gallery’s reputation as a nurturing ground for emerging talent.

The CANADA Aesthetic

From its inception, CANADA has been synonymous with raw, alien, and cutting-edge art. The gallery quickly became the go-to place for experiencing something truly unique in the New York art scene. This quirky program, which initially might have seemed risky, proved to be remarkably prescient. CANADA’s artists have gone on to achieve significant recognition, with several featured in major exhibitions at institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Venice Biennale.

The gallery’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. The aftermath of September 11, 2001, nearly wiped out CANADA’s business in TriBeCa. However, with resilience and a bit of FEMA allocation, they seized the opportunity to start fresh. In 2002, they found a new home in a Chinatown office building, renovating the space themselves and becoming part of a burgeoning gallery scene in the area.

A Family Feel in the Art World

Despite its growing success, CANADA has maintained a charm that sets it apart from more polished galleries. Collectors and art enthusiasts alike have been drawn to its unpretentious atmosphere. The gallery’s “family feel” has become one of its most endearing qualities, creating a welcoming environment for both established collectors and newcomers to the art world.

Artistic Milestones

Over the years, CANADA has been the launchpad for numerous artistic careers and memorable exhibitions. From Michael Mahalchick’s month-long performance series to the early showcases of now-renowned artists like Katherine Bernhardt and Joe Bradley, the gallery has consistently been at the forefront of contemporary art trends.

CANADA Today

Today, CANADA stands as a testament to the power of vision, community, and artistic integrity. It has evolved from a scrappy upstart to a respected institution in the New York art world, all while maintaining its original spirit of innovation and support for emerging artists.

Looking to the Future

As CANADA continues to grow and evolve, it faces the challenge of balancing its grassroots origins with its increasing prominence in the art world. The gallery’s journey reflects the broader changes in New York’s art scene, from the gritty days of downtown experimentation to the more polished contemporary landscape.

CANADA’s story is one of perseverance, community, and artistic vision. It remains a vital part of New York’s art ecosystem, continuing to champion bold, innovative work while never forgetting its roots. For art lovers and collectors alike, CANADA is not just a gallery; it’s a living piece of New York’s contemporary art history.
